Formula Opel European Union Series
- The Formula Opel Euroseries was designed for the up and
coming young professional road racing driver. Since its inception in 1988,
nine drivers have competed in the FIA World Championship for Formula One
cars with Mike Hakkinen, Heinz Herald Frentzen, Rubens Barrichello, David
Coulthard and Joe Verstappen, having attained Grand Prix podium finishes.
-
- The 1996 Euroseries will see the establishment of new
lap records as the cars have been updated during the off season to both
improve performance and safety; and yet, maintain the hall mark of the
Formula equal engines, equal tires and equal chassis.
-
- The Euroseries will continue to figure prominently on
the European racing scene, particularly with the addition of supporting
events at the new FIA International Touring Car Championship. Television
Coverage has been increased in 1996, with regular coverage on 3SAT in Germany
as well as Eurosport.
-
- While economic woes have reduced grids in many classes
of racing, the 8th Annual Euroseries for Formula Opel cars has significantly
larger grids than the past three years, the addition of new teams and a
host of rookie drivers, with no less than 12 nationalities represented.
The EFDA, European Formula Drivers Association, continues to emphasize
racing as opposed to testing. Official testing programs have been reduced
to a bare minimum, not only reducing costs for competitors, but creating
a situation similar to the conditions a F3000 and/or Formula One driver
must contend with.
-
- Perhaps the most significant feature is the parity amongst the leading
teams. With four different drivers having won in the first six races, representing
three different teams; giving the series a unique balance few championships
enjoy. Euroseries - EFDA, European Formula Drivers Association
